Modern home office highlighting the need for security strategies to create a safe and productive workspace

Why a home office needs a unique security approach

While the main goal of home security is to protect your property from intruders, a home office presents a unique set of challenges that demand a more tailored approach.

Unlike other areas of your home, a home office typically houses sensitive work-related information, expensive electronic equipment, and valuable intellectual property.

These assets not only carry significant financial value but can also have serious repercussions if compromised, such as identity theft, data breaches, or loss of critical business information.

The nature of a home office tends to blur the line between personal and professional spaces, which can increase the likelihood of security lapses.

For example, while you might be vigilant about locking up your home at night, it’s easy to overlook securing your office during the day, especially when you’re constantly moving about.

What’s more, a home office often has more external access points, such as windows or doors leading to the garden. These can be overlooked when thinking about home security as a whole.

All these factors make it essential to implement a security strategy that’s specifically designed to safeguard your workspace, and everything within it. And the place to begin, as with any security strategy, is with a risk assessment.

Identifying risks within your home office

There are two core risks that typically arise within a home-based workspace:

Data breaches

The risk of sensitive work data being compromised is very real, not just digitally over unsecured networks, but physically.

Confidential papers left on display and data-loaded devices not locked away are easy pickings for an intruder.

Theft of work equipment

Burglars are very interested in electronic devices. The likes of smartphones, tablets, PCs, printers and storage devices all have a high price tag, and will be targeted as a priority.

Security measures to protect your home office

There are various measures you can employ to protect your home office:

Secure locks and doors

It is recommended that you install high-quality locks on your doors and windows to prevent unauthorised entry into your home office. And use them!

Too many people leave their windows open to ‘keep the air flowing’ around their home office while they pop out for a walk or take a lunchbreak in the garden. But doing so could compromise your home office security.

If you do wish to keep a window open, consider fitting a limiter. These allow you to leave the window open a small amount to let some air in, and prevent anyone on the outside opening it any further.

Window security

As well as locking your home office windows when you’re not in it, think about securing them with reinforced glass or security film.

This is especially important if your office is on the ground floor, or over a flat roof.

Security safe

Home office workers are well advised to protect their portable devices and sensitive documents by storing them in a security safe.

Always remember the importance of fixing your safe in place. It is not uncommon for thieves to take safes from homes so they can work on cracking them later.

Remote monitoring and alarm systems

CCTV cameras and remote monitoring: Installing CCTV cameras around the home office doesn’t just act as a deterrent, you’ll also have access to valuable footage should you need it as evidence in a prosecution.

Smart, wireless cameras are easily positioned, and you won’t need any cabling. Simply connect them to your WiFi, and you’ll have a reliable feed of footage sent directly to your smart device, complete with remote monitoring alerts should unexpected activity arise when you are ‘out of office’. You can also link up to a monitoring centre should you wish for added peace of mind.

Smart alarms: Smart alarm systems and sensors can be set to cover the home office specifically, with notifications sent directly to the homeowner’s device in the event of a potential break-in.

Working from home – insurance considerations

As well as protecting your home office courtesy of a variety of security measures, it’s also important to make sure you are protected in terms of insurance.

If you work from home, you should inform your home insurance provider. If you work for yourself, then you should consider taking out specific insurance cover for your business equipment, bearing in mind that if anything happens to it, your operations – and therefore your income – will be disrupted.

If you work from home for an employer, be sure to discuss with them who is responsible for insurance cover.
