Latest Commercial Victimisation Survey Shows London is Worst Hit

In February this year, the government published the headline findings of the 2013 Commercial Victimisation Survey. This month, further details have appeared in the second release. The survey focused on four business areas which make up around a third of business premises in England and Wales.

Among them was the wholesale and retail sector, with London area businesses being the worst hit. For every 1000 commercial properties in the sector, there were 30,500 crimes. Theft was the most common type, with burglary with entry the most costly incident, averaging £1.4K worth of losses per incident. Many episodes of vandalism and fraud were also noted in the report.

Save Money by Spending on Protection

Investing in measures to prevent or detect such incidents will save you money and aggravation in the long run. Insurance companies will be reluctant to honour claims from companies which have not done so, especially in areas like London where the crime rate is so high.

Every building is different and there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution where crime prevention is concerned. Many options are available to you. At Barry Bros we have experts who can help you assess your risks and find the best solutions to mitigate them.

It might be you need stronger doors with steel door sets and frames as a physical safeguard for your stock, equipment or valuables. Adequate locking devices and systems are also important, and are often a condition of an insurance policy. We’ll advise you on all of that.

Alarms and CCTV

When someone manages to gain entry, if an audible alarm is triggered, not only will it summon urgent assistance, it might also scare off the would-be thief empty handed. Alarms can be hard wired or wire-free and monitored to alert police and key holders. They can also be integrated with CCTV systems that can be viewed remotely via broadband.

CCTV surveillance systems can be networked or standalone and range from a single camera system if you just need to focus on one entrance, to a multi camera system that can cover all external and internal areas, including your car park and emergency exits.
