BT Redcare Service to end 1 August 2025: Take Action Now

The UK’s transition to an all-digital communications network is well underway and while the full Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) switch-off is not set to be completed until 2027, an urgent change will take effect much sooner.

BT has announced that it will be shutting down its Redcare alarm signalling service from 1 August 2025.

If your intruder alarm, fire alarm, or other remote monitoring system relies on Redcare, you will need to act now to ensure you have a suitable alternative in place.

The PSTN switch-off: A quick recap

For decades, the PSTN has been the backbone of the UK’s phone and alarm communication systems, using copper telephone lines to transmit signals.

However, with advancements in technology, the country is moving towards a fully digital system, replacing traditional phone lines with fibre-optic networks.

The PSTN switch-off is scheduled to be completed by 2027, meaning all services relying on analogue phone lines, including alarm systems, will need to transition to digital alternatives.

While the PSTN switch-off is happening gradually, BT’s decision to close its Redcare service in 2025 accelerates the urgency for thousands of businesses and homeowners who depend on it for their alarm systems.

What is BT Redcare and why is it closing?

For over 30 years, BT Redcare has been a trusted provider of remotely monitored alarm signalling services, ensuring that alarm signals reach the relevant monitoring centres in the event of an emergency.

It has been widely used for intruder alarms, fire alarms, and other critical monitoring systems.

However, BT has now confirmed that all Redcare services will cease on 1 August 2025.

This means that if you currently use a Redcare system, you will need to switch to an alternative before this date to maintain the integrity of your security and fire safety measures.

Who will be affected by the Redcare switch-off?

The closure of BT Redcare will impact over 100,000 private customers and businesses across the UK. If your intruder alarm, fire alarm, sprinkler system, hold-up alarm, or critical monitoring systems such as fridge temperature or water leak detection rely on BT Redcare, you will need to take action.

Why you need to act NOW

While August 2025 may seem a long way off, the demand for alternative alarm signalling solutions will increase as the deadline approaches. Leaving your decision to the last minute could lead to installation delays or even a lapse in your security coverage.

More importantly, if your insurance policy requires a monitored alarm system, you must ensure that any replacement meets your insurer’s requirements. Failing to install an equivalent or better system could result in a breach of your insurance conditions, leaving you unprotected in the event of a claim.

What are your options?

With Redcare being phased out, customers will need to switch to a new alarm signalling service. The good news is that there are alternative solutions available, including:

  • GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) Communicators – These use mobile networks to transmit alarm signals. They often come with roaming or dual SIMs for added reliability.
  • IP (Internet Protocol) Communicators – These connect to your existing internet service to transmit alarm signals digitally.
  • Dual Signalling Systems – A combination of both GPRS and IP communicators, offering a primary and backup communication method to ensure reliability.

If your alarm is maintained by Barry Bros Security and you haven’t already made alternative arrangements, please get in touch and we will recommend the best replacement based on your existing system and security requirements.
