In our May safe special, we’re exploring some of the lesser considered aspects of security safes… in this post, we’re looking at how modern technologies such as biometric locks, smart safes and home integration are transforming the way home and business owners buy safes.

Safes are vital for keeping valuable and sentimental items protected from theft and, as we’ve recently explored, environmental hazards.

Since we started selling safes over 75 years ago, we’ve obviously seen a lot of changes. But perhaps the biggest evolution in the world of security safes has taken place in recent times, as technology has made a significant impact on how safes are made, and how they operate.

In this post we are exploring the most important technological advancements that have transformed safes in recent years.

Biometric locks

Biometric technology uses human credentials to allow access. Such credentials include fingerprints, facial recognition and retinal scans. Each of these is unique to the individual, and so provides the highest levels of security.

Unlike keys, combinations or codes, biometric credentials cannot be transferred, duplicated, lost or stolen.

Biometric entry provides a convenient, quick and easy was to access a safe, without the need for keys or having to remember combinations or codes.

The added advantage of biometric locks is that they provide the ability to track who access the safe, and when. So if there’s an incident, or something has not been replaced, it becomes easier to trace.

Whilst they are one of the safest ways to protect valuables, biometric safes do tend to carry a higher initial outlay than traditional safes, and may also attract more in maintenance costs.

Of course, this type of safe is also dependent on technology, so if there’s an issue with a sensor malfunctioning, it could lead to problems. Most biometric safes are, however, designed with a backup manual entry system to be on the ‘safe’ side.

Smart safes

A smart safe is an advanced security solution that integrates smart technology to enhance the protection of valuables.

They combine traditional physical security with cutting edge digital innovations to provide a robust and user-friendly way to safeguard the things that matter most.

Smart safes are designed with the likes of biometric or digital locks, as well as remote access capabilities. They allow users to monitor and control their safe via a smartphone app, receive real time alerts for unauthorised access attempts, and to integrate the safe within the broader home security and automation system.

Home security and automation integration

Smart safes can be connected to home security and automation systems courtesy of Internet of Things (IoT) technology.

This connectivity allows users to manage all their security devices from a single platform.

It also provides enhanced protection. For example, should a sensor detect that the safe has been tampered with, then the connected security system can trigger other security devices into action, for example automatic lockdown, an intruder alarm, or CCTV recording.

Future trends in safe technology

Technology is evolving all the time, and the security safe landscape is changing with it.

Artificial intelligence (AI) will have one of the most significant impacts on the security safe market over the next few years, as well as on the security industry generally.

AI will enhance the functionality and security of safes. By incorporating machine learning and predictive analytics, AI-enabled safes will provide advanced threat detection and prevention capabilities.

AI safes will be able to detect patterns and user behaviour to identify anomalies and potential security breaches in real time. This will allow automated alerts to be triggered, or lockdowns to protect contents. Voice controlled access will be introduced, making it easier to manage security settings.

Predictive maintenance is another area in which AI will make an impact. The technology is able to monitor the safe’s components and anticipate maintenance needs ahead of any issues arising. This will ensure the safe remains in top working condition.
